LOS ANGELES (AP) — For the first time in 88 years, the annual festival hosted by the Shriners in Los Angeles is being billed as a carnival, not a circus, and won't feature performing animals.

Fred Bernardt, a top official with the LA Shriners, said Monday that a construction project at Shrine Auditorium has forced the event to be scaled back.

The Performing Animal Welfare Society praised the Shriners for halting the use of elephants and tigers at the show next month.

Bernhardt says it's too soon to tell if the circus will return next year.

The Shrine Circus had been a target of animal welfare protests for years

The carnival scheduled for April 11-13 will feature rides, games and food stalls.
