Although many people call Karl Johnson a scissor artist, that moniker hardly describes what he does. In just minutes, Johnson can view a squirming child or a photo of a cherished memory and create a frame-worthy paper silhouette.

From noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 20, Johnson will put his scissors to work at Full Circle Bookstore in 50 Penn Place.

Full Circle Bookstore owner Jim Tolbert knew Johnson would have to return to the store after his appearance last fall.

“His work is quite impressive, and the families that attended the event last year were very happy with it,” Tolbert said. “As soon as we heard he was traveling, we knew we had to bring him back to Full Circle.”

Johnson developed this skill as a child by working with his father. He attributes his skill partially to his blindness in one eye, which forces him to examine shadows to determine the distance and shape of objects.

Through the years, he has honed his skills and created silhouettes for celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Garner. He has been invited to create silhouettes at Jennifer Lopez's birthday party, as well as Reese Witherspoon's wedding.

Johnson can create silhouettes from real life or a photograph.

The event at Full Circle Bookstore is free to watch, but appointments are necessary in order to get a customized silhouette.

Appointments are in five-minute blocks from noon to 6 p.m. The 5-by-7-inch silhouettes are available for $25 each.
