Silicone regains popularity
Silicone regains popularity

After ending a 14-year hiatus from the market last November, silicone breast implants are gaining in popularity in Oklahoma.

The Food and Drug Administration pulled silicone implants, which doctors describe as having the consistency of gummy bear candy, from the market in 1992 after women reported they leaked, causing disfigurement and disease.

But research published in this month's issue of the Annuals of Plastic Surgery showed no increased risk of cancers and other disorders among women who have had silicone implants.

Many women prefer the firmer silicone to saline, two Oklahoma City plastic surgeons say. Silicone implants feel and look more natural and don't have the "ripples” that occur around the edges of saline implants.

‘Generic vs. brand name'
Dr. Juan Brou, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Oklahoma City, said he often performed secondary breast surgery in which a woman returns because she is dissatisfied or her implants need to be replaced. Breast augmentation is not a one-time procedure.

The number of women who ask for silicone has grown tenfold in the last year, he said, adding that women now have an option they didn't have before.

Nevertheless, he said, "There's still a lot of people with a lot of reservations about silicone. They're mostly unfounded I think.”

When patients ask him which implant he recommends, he tells them the silicone model is lighter, softer and a better match for women's tissue. However, saline implants cost about $4,200 compared to $5,200 for the silicone option.

"It's like generic versus brand name,” he said.

Insurance normally does not pay for breast augmentation.

Are new models safer?
Brou performs more than 120 breast augmentations a year. Last year, about 30 percent were silicone. Still, although better-engineered implants have made doctors willing to use them and patients increasingly asking for them, each woman is unique.

"I don't think it's a time bomb, and the timing is different from one woman to another,” Brou said. "I think the great majority of people are perfectly happy with their results, and the minority experience complications that are mild.”

Dr. Stephen C. Gauthier, an Oklahoma City plastic surgeon who is completing board certification, said about three-quarters of his patients prefer silicone.

"The thing that patients need to remember is that even saline implants have a silicone shell,” he said, adding that the silicone wouldn't escape from the new models.

However, he said, plastic surgeons should provide options and not attempt to talk patients into choosing one implant over the other. Also, the FDA does not allow silicone implants in women who are younger than 22 years old.

Using silicone in medicine is nothing new, Gauthier noted. He uses the substance on the skin of burn patients at Integris Baptist Medical Center. He said he hopes new implants would last longer than their predecessors, perhaps longer than 15 years.

Actually, I am all natural. But, if in the future I wanted anything done, it is my prerogative. Again, a little self righteous to bring up the bible for the sake of argument but not follow it by passing judgment upon others.

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged." Luke 6:37. Jennifer, although I'm more comfortable with people who want cosmetic surgery undergoing at least minimal counseling (so they will not have unrealistic expectations)--I agree with you about the old argument "God gave you." I'm not sure He decides exactly how each person who is born is going to look.

Why has silicone REALLY regained popularity? I am a 33 year old mother of 2 daughters. I have had 2 breast augmentations in the past 12 years. When I was 21 I received a beautiful set of saline implants. These implants survived breastfeeding and still looked beautiful for 11+ years. To my own demise, in August of this year I decided to have another augmentation in order to increase my breast size. I found a very kind surgeon with many years of experience, right here in the Oklahoma City metro area. He insisted that silicone implants were the best option for my body type. His nurses raved about the "new" silicone implants and their beauty. He even offered a discount and a 10 year extended warrenty (I believe is a producer's perk to all patients) on the implants, if I would go that route. I agreed! After much contemplation, I called his office to cancel the silicone implants and order my loyal saline implants for my new breasts. I was told that the doctor did not feel comfortable using saline implants and AGAIN insisted that I would be very disappointed with saline. I went through with the surgery, and have NEVER been so ashamed of my breasts. I take all necessary measures to make sure nobody ever sees them. Not something I had planned on getting for $4,200. I have expressed my unhappiness to my surgeon, and I was told to "live with them, you will get used to them." So my concern and disgust is this, have silicone implants become popular again based on their preformance OR have they become popular again based on the implant's producers offering a monetary kick-back to the local surgeons?? If anyone is considering implants, please don't let your doctor sway your judgement. Sincerely, unhappy chest of Edmond

Patricia, If using God as an excuse, the bible also says "thou shall not judge". To each his own.

If you just went with what God gave you there would be no need for this conversation. The only time you should have implants is in the case of a mastectomy or some other medical reason, not for vanity . Your boobs will be the only perky thing you have when you are 50 & sagging everywhere else. Face it people everyone gets old & your boobs will only make you look worse then .
