Since 2004, sequels have dominated the summer box office

If it seems like summer movies have been set on repeat lately, well, that's increasingly been true. Since the mid-2000s, the summer box office has been owned by sequels, reboots and spinoffs.



According to an analysis of data from Hollywood.com, a film franchise has topped the summer box office for each of the last 10 years. From 1993 to 2003, original films such as Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park and Finding Nemo led the pack.
