‘First Muslim country-western singer’ takes unusual path to success

From chemical engineering major to success as a country western singer, Ponca City native Kareem Salama releases his new album next month.

Kareem Salama is used to people asking him about his childhood.

Ever since he began making a name for himself internationally as a country-western singer a few years ago, the Muslim American from Ponca City gets asked a lot about his upbringing in conservative Oklahoma.

“The question seems to be raised a lot by folks because of 9/11. I sort of frame that in that context. … In terms of identity, I felt like everyone else, I felt American,” Salama says...
