About 250 single moms were treated like royalty as part of the Single Parent Support Network's 2012 “Queen for a Day” activities at United Methodist Church of the Servant, 14343 N MacArthur.
Rhonda Thomas, of Oklahoma City, the network's founder, said the eighth annual event was perhaps the best yet, particularly because it was held at the spacious northwest Oklahoma City megachurch through the graciousness of the church's women's ministry leader, the Rev. Robyn Goggs.
“I think just the energy in the event was one of hope, like an anticipation of great things to come,” she said.
Thomas said the main goal of “Queen for a Day” is to give the parents respite, fun, encouragement and some information “that they can take into the real world as they raise their children.”
“The day is really to help refill them so that they can continue to pour out,” she said.
Highlights of the day included a presentation by Yvonne Pennington, an author, child and adult psychologist, marriage and family therapist, who is the mother of television celebrity Ty Pennington. Thomas said.
A group of speakers talked to the mothers on a variety of topics during the event's breakout sessions.
Thomas said more than 200 volunteers helped make the event happen. With child care provided for the mothers, the moms were treated to a day just for themselves. Volunteers such as those from Church of the Servant gave foot massages to some single moms. Other moms gathered information and shopped at vendors' booths set up in the church's spacious atrium-lobby area.
