Sites offer support for 'gamer widows'
Sherry Myrow of Toronto said her husband gave up cooking, sleeping and even eating as he played video games for up to 18 hours at a time. "I only saw happiness in his eyes if he was playing the game or talking about the game,” she said. "The game consumed his life, and there was no room for me.” Shelly Quintana of New Jersey said her husband was like a zombie. To help other people who also have lived with video game addicts, Myrow launched www.gamerwidow.com, and Quintana started www.gamingsucks.com. Morrow said readers wrote that her site "has saved their marriage (or) that the site has helped a person make that fateful decision to leave, and they feel better about it.” Some comments contributors have posted to forums on those sites:
•"It's like his whole world only exists in the fake worldly game, and I'm not included.” •"Within six months, he dropped out of school and was playing every waking hour. He went a whole year without any sort of job. His brother once stayed with us ... for over a month; they had their computers set up on my kitchen table and never moved.” •"It's a good time-killer, and my problems seem to vanish whenever I play. But I do know when to stop and put down the keyboard and mouse and turn away from my monitor. ... The whole addiction thing is just a small minority of us.” •"Heck, she talks more to people online than she does me, and I feel like she's drifting away. (I) don't know what to do.” •"... Something is causing them to hide out in the game. My husband says that he can get rid of all of our problems and stress when he is on the game.” •"All I wanted was a trip to the beach. All he could think about was when we were coming home so that he could jump on the computer. I spent 10 minutes on the beach, and it was Friday night!”Related Articles
