MIDWEST CITY — Police arrested six people, all Oklahoma City residents, in connection with a weekend homicide.
Arrested were: Ashley Rene Craig, 17; Jarvis Jones, 19; DeMarkus Long, 19; Justin Woody, 19; Aaron Gaines, 19; and Ravan Craig, 19, all on complaints of murder, conspiracy to commit a felony and robbery, Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said.
Police were called about 1:20 a.m. Saturday to 10002 Caton Place in reference to a woman being shot. Shirley Butler, 39, was shot after she answered a late-night knock at the front door, her husband, Kalvin Murray, told police. Murray's teenage son also was in the home, he said.
Butler was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Officers were told two men and a woman fled the house on foot. Police found bullet casings, a clip from a weapon and a women's shoe in the front yard.
Investigators found a large quantity of marijuana inside the house, Clabes said. Police learned Murray and Butler were robbed in August but did not report it because drugs were involved, he said.
During the investigation, Ashley Craig was identified as the female who knocked on the door and the owner of the shoe in the front yard, Clabes said. Ashley Craig and her sister, Ravan Craig, were arrested Saturday.
Jones and Woody were initially arrested Saturday by University of Oklahoma police on unrelated traffic complaints. They were taken to Oklahoma County jail.
Long was arrested by the Oklahoma City police gang unit, and Gaines was arrested in Oklahoma City by Midwest City police Sunday.
The six suspects told investigators they were trying to steal drugs and money from Murray and Butler. The gun and both suspected getaway vehicles used during the crime were recovered by police, Clabes said.
Midwest City police plan to present felony drug complaints against Murray to the Oklahoma County district attorney's office, Clabes said.
