Slaughter won't end horse abuse, neglect

How can a state whose capital city is known as the “Horse Show Capital of the World” consider passing bills that would allow horse slaughter plants to open here? The idea is appalling! Oklahoma has a reputation for celebrating and respecting horses. We shouldn't become the place where horses are brutally slaughtered for their meat. Americans don't eat horsemeat, so the slaughter houses would benefit only foreign interests, not Oklahoma.

The people who say horse slaughter is a solution to horse abuse and neglect are spreading falsehoods. Most of the horses that are sent to slaughter are in good condition and able to live productive lives. In other states where slaughter was banned, no corresponding rise in cruelty and neglect cases has been seen.

As Oklahomans, we should continue the tradition of treating horses with dignity and urge legislators not to reverse a law that protects horses from enduring unthinkable cruelty.
