Snowfall nears record levels in Texas Panhandle
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — Snowfall in the Texas Panhandle is reaching record levels as wind gusts appear to be strengthening in the region.
Roads are impassable and airports are closed Monday as blizzard conditions drive people inside. Gov. Rick Perry says state personnel and equipment are being mobilized to assist stranded motorists.
The National Weather Service says wind gusts are ranging from 50 to 60 mph, but hurricane-force gusts of 75 mph are being recorded at the Amarillo airport.
The NWS says Amarillo could see a new record for daily snowfall. About 16 inches has fallen on the city since midnight. The daily record is 18.1 inches set March 25, 1934.
The weather service says the storm will provide temporary relief from drought conditions, but is not a long-term remedy.
