Some community leaders deflect blame

Published: August 18, 2013

Regarding “Clergy offer forum on youths, racism, violence” (News, Aug. 8): In a forum held at Fairview Baptist Church, state Rep. Anastasia Pittman, D-Oklahoma City, invoked Oklahoma's “Make My Day” law as similar to the Florida law that was the main defense in the George Zimmerman case. False! The whole defense in the Zimmerman case was that he acted in self-defense. This is why a jury found him not guilty.

Community leaders do a great injustice to others, and do nothing to address the real causes of violence in society, by deflecting blame and playing to base emotions rather than fact and reason. Any racial divides that remain in society will continue to fester as long as community leaders continue to pour salt into the wounds, rather than face the truth. We all must do better!
