NORMAN — Waiting for Nebraska’s besieged offense to come back on the field for the second quarter, all 11 Oklahoma defenders waved their arms for the crowd.

Only Barry Switzer’s halftime introduction received a louder ovation.

After three straight shaky showings, the defense delivered its most dominant performance against Big 12 competition, as OU routed the Huskers 62-28.

OU forced three turnovers in the game’s first five minutes, sparking the Sooners to a 28-0 lead that effectively ended the game before Husker quarterback Joe Ganz could attempt a fourth pass.

After one quarter, Nebraska had 32 yards. The Sooners had 35 points.

“That’s how you draw it up,” defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. “It wasn’t clean.

“But we’re getting closer.”

Nebraska’s chances of winning ended on its first offensive play. Cornerback Dominique Franks intercepted Ganz’s screen pass for a 20-yard touchdown to put OU ahead 14-0.

OU forced two more turnovers on Nebraska’s next four plays. The Sooners converted both into touchdowns and OU led 28-0 with 9:27 still left in the first quarter.

“Our defense made the big plays, the big turnovers,” coach Bob Stoops said. “Our offense took advantage of it.

“It was a great way to start the game.”

Despite the flawless start, OU’s defense still gave up 418 total yards and four touchdowns, which had the defense’s leaders shaking their heads.
