53 years later, Homer tailgates not too far from the park bench where he sat that no good, very bad day in Sooner history. It's a tailgate he started 30 years ago, and that his daughter Mandy Grove took over about 10 years ago.

The Grove-Jones tailgate encompasses eight tents and has a foundation of 30 fans that often swells up to 200. Located just north of the student union, the tailgate includes satellite television, a kids table and tent and a rotating menu that Mandy announced during the week before the game on her Facebook page. Those expecting to attend know to check the Facebook page for the theme and adhere to it with whatever dish they bring.

During my visit, the theme was Stick it to the Seminoles. While it might sound better suited for the State Fair of Oklahoma, the result was a dazzling array of kabobs: beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, meatballs, bologna and event dessert.
