Sooner team scores an honor at Capitol

By his own account, not much intimidates University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops.

But standing before the full state Senate on Monday was a little daunting, he said. It was a good thing the Senate gallery was full of fans and senators who couldn’t wait to have their pictures taken with Stoops and the team.

The Senate honored the 2008 team and quarterback Sam Bradford with the reading of two Senate resolutions. The first resolution honored Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, who opted against going to the NFL to stay at OU. The second resolution congratulated the team on its performance.

Flanked by 14 team members, Bradford accepted the honor.

"Normally, I’m not big on individual awards,” he said. "But I’m really honored to be here today with all my teammates.”

After the resolution honoring the team was read, Stoops spoke.

"This is really out of my comfort zone,” Stoops joked, as he thanked the Senate for the resolution and continued support.

Stoops introduced all the players who came to the Capitol on Monday and said the team was anxious to go to OU Medical Center, where wide receiver Corey Wilson was recovering from injuries he suffered in a rollover crash on Interstate 35 on Friday.
