SoonerCon 22 kicked off Friday at Reed Conference Center in Midwest City, and traffic and attendance were significantly up for Friday, convention chair Jerry Wall told me.  The 2013 SoonerCon is on pace to be the biggest since the convention’s revival.

Some highlights of the show on Friday for me:

- Nice turnout at the “Posthuman Project” panel, where director Kyle Roberts showed the trailer on the big screen and several stars of the film answered questions about the project.   It was fun to be on a panel for a project that I helped get started.  Alex Harris, Collin Place, Josh Bonzie and Kyle Whalen interacted with fans and shared their perspectives on the project.  Jerry Bennett, who provided a pinup for the prequel comic, was on hand to announce he’d be working on a “Posthuman Project” tie-in in the future.  Bennett, with writer Jackson Compton, also debuted “Nadir’s Zenith” #3 at the show on Friday.

- In other Jerry Bennett news, he announced he’ll be teaming up with the Stan Lee Foundation to provide artwork for a future project.  The Stan Lee Foundation was on hand at SoonerCon; the foundation aims to promote literacy through the medium of comic books, and has plans to work with many schools and comic book stores.

- Hugo winner CJ Cherryh shared tips for writing about politics in negotiation in a panel focused on diplomacy in SF.  Making the reader understand what each character wants and the lengths to which they will go to get that helps increase the drama in scenes of diplomacy, she said.

- JediOKC was on hand with R2D2; the Starship Ajax crew were on hand with part of a starship bridge replica.  Both very cool.

- Gaming was well-attended throughout the day.  A corner area, where the above vintage toys and games were displayed, also had vintage console games people could play.   The Retro Gamers Society was involved with this project.

- CJ Cherryh and John “Count Gregore” Ferguson were presented with Nucleon Awards as they were inducted into the Oklahoma Speculative Fiction Hall of Fame.

- Larry Nemecek’s “Con of Wrath” fundraiser was a lot of fun Friday night.   It was a blast to watch “Star Trek Continues” on the big screen, and Nemecek brought other “Star Trek” hidden treasures to share with fans.

Much more to come at SoonerCon on Saturday.  Full schedule at I’ll be hosting a Q&A with comics artist Mark Texeira  at 1 p.m. in Ballroom C; hope to see many of you there.
