A popular “X-Men” creator is coming to Oklahoma City as part of SoonerCon, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Sheraton Downtown Oklahoma City, 1 N Broadway Ave. The event will also feature a zombie walk, a time-travelers' ball and steampunk-related programming.

Con organizers say the event has grown each year since restarting in 2006.

“Oklahoma's going through a huge resurgence in independent art, and it all sort of ties together,” said Jerry Wall, chairman of SoonerCon.

This year, well-known comics artist Michael Golden will appear as the artist guest of honor. Golden co-created the character Rogue from the X-Men, as played by Anna Paquin in three feature films.

The 1981 “Avengers Annual” No. 10 featured the character's first appearance, in an issue written by longtime “X-Men” writer Chris Claremont. In 1983, he worked on an annual edition for the “X-Men” as well.

“The ‘Uncanny X-Men' most people, when they think about what the X-Men are, they think about the characters that Michael Golden was involved with,” Wall said.

Golden worked on other popular Marvel properties in the 1980s, including “The 'Nam,” “Micronauts,” “G.I. Joe” and “Doctor Strange.”

This month, Golden provided a variant cover to “Before Watchmen: Minutemen” No. 1, the first issue in the new prequel to the “Watchmen” graphic novel.

Golden's art is examined in the book “Excess: The Art of Michael Golden,” and in two recent sketchbooks, “Heroes and Villains,” and “MORE Heroes and Villains.” An extensive interview with Golden, as well as a tutorial, is featured in the DVD release “Creator Chronicles: Michael Golden.”
