Oklahoma center Gabe Ikard was named the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year on Thursday, also earning a spot on the Division I Academic All-America Team.

The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

It’s the third Academic All-American honor for Ikard, who was named to the first team last season and second team as a sophomore in 2011.

He’s the first All-America of the Year for the Sooners’ football team and the fourth at the school. Lana Moran (softball, 1999-2000), Stacey Dales (women’s basketball, 2000-01) and Aaron Ivey (baseball, 2006-07) also earned the honors.

Ikard has started 48 of 50 games at center or left guard and leads the Sooners with 82 knockdown blocks this season.

He’s a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy. Both of those awards honor players for their performances on and off the field.

Ikard, an Oklahoma City ative and former Bishop McGuinness standout, earned an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship as a winner of a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award. He is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy as the top scholar-athlete in the nation.

He graduated with a 4.0 GPA in May and is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree.

Oklahoma has now landed an individual on the Academic All-America squad each of the last four years, a feat that was last accomplished from 1962-68.
