Sooners crown three Big 12 wrestling champions, finish third

By Matt Patterson, Staff Writer, Published: March 7, 2010
NORMAN — Jarrod Patterson didn’t stop training even when he beat top-seeded Andrew Long by a decision in the finals of the Big 12 Wrestling Tournament Saturday night at McCasland Field House.

Patterson was among three tournament champions for the Sooners who finished third in the team race with 64 points. Kyle Terry won his second straight championship at 149 pounds. Shane Vernon won at 157 pounds in a decision, capping off a big day for the Sooners, who finished last a year ago.

After bear hugs from head coach Jack Spates and assistant coach Sammie Henson, Patterson sprinted into the Sooners’ training room for a few laps.

What happened moments before was something neither Spates nor Patterson could have guessed just over three months ago when the true freshman was pulled out of redshirt for Bedlam. Patterson won that night in what was the biggest match of his life.

At least until Saturday night when he took Long down with just over one minute remaining to secure the win. Patterson beat OSU’s Chris Notte in his semifinals match in a one-point decision.

"I came in knowing I’d have two tough matches,” Patterson said. "They’re going to be like that for the rest of the year.
