Oklahoma doesn’t typically offer quarterbacks very early in the recruiting process.
But Monday, the Sooners made their earliest offer at the position in the Bob Stoops era with an offer to 2016 dual-threat quarterback Shane Buechele of Arlington (Texas) Lamar.
Buechele impressed at OU’s recent camp in Norman and also has offers from Kentucky, TCU and Texas Tech.
The Sooners, though, would seem to have a bit of a built-in advantage with the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder.
Buechele’s brother, Garrett, played baseball for the Sooners and his sisters both attend OU.
Shane’s father, Steve, played Major League Baseball for 11 seasons. All of his minor-league time was spent in Oklahoma with either the Oklahoma City 89ers or the Tulsa Drillers.
The Sooners do not have a quarterback commit from the 2015 class and currently have four quarterbacks on their roster—sophomores Trevor Knight and Baker Mayfield, redshirt freshman Cody Thomas and freshman Justice Hansen.
