Oklahoma football: Sooners' R.J. Washington happy to lead team onto Owen Field

R.J. Washington may not be the captain of the defense, but he will be the guy who steps up and leads the team onto the field. He did it many times last year, even when he didn't have a starting spot. Since the captains are already out on the field, Washington knows somebody needs to lead the Sooners onto the field, so why not him?

The potential has always been there. I think my focus hasn't always been there more than anything.

I don't want (the younger players) to take as long as I took. I tell them all the time, ‘I want you to be better players than me.' So I'm going to let you know what didn't work for me so y'all can go the other way.

Getting highly recruited, that was cool and everything. Hoorah. I gave myself a couple high fives. But that might have contributed to me not working as hard, thinking maybe my athleticism would just kind of work its way in and I'd be all right.

If I can't get on the field, somebody is going to see me. If I can't get on the field, I'm leading them out.

I thought I'd earn my stripes because I got a couple of sacks but then it didn't happen, then it didn't happen and then didn't happen. So I tried something else.

Honestly because my locker is right by the exit door, I'd just wait and then kind of slide off to the side and then kind of get out in front.

We're just the rest of the team running out. Landry will already be on the field, but if Landry wants to do it, let him go ahead. Or if anyone else wants to do it, go ahead.

Frank (Alexander) told me once ‘Hey back up.' And I was like ‘Alright.' But if they don't say anything, I'm running out.
