SOPER — It takes a little work to get people’s attention in Las Vegas.

But let someone lower a trick roper from the roof of the Thomas and Mack Center via cable about the size of a shoelace and you might get it done.

That someone was a clean-cut, happy-go-lucky trick roper and trick rider from the southeast Oklahoma town of Soper named John Harrison.

The year was 2002, the second of what will soon be three trips to the National Finals Rodeo as a contract act. He and other contract acts will take to the arena during television commercial breaks in the NFR broadcasts.

He’d roped all his life, but never while being lowered from the roof of an arena.
