High school football: Sophomore running back Terrel Buchanan leads Union to rout of Edmond Santa Fe

The No. 1-ranked Redskins dominated up front and came out with a 52-19 win over Edmond Santa Fe at Wantland Stadium to advance to the Class 6A semifinals.

Union (10-2) will face Jenks next weekend for a berth in the finals. The game will be played Friday or Saturday at a neutral site to be announced.

“It's a fun deal every time we play them,” Union coach Kirk Fridrich said. “We make each other better, and there's nothing better than Thanksgiving practices — except for practicing the Monday after.”

One of those two teams has won every 6A championship since 1996.

Justin Silmon was Union's leading scorer coming in, but it was sophomore Terrel Buchanan that took over against Santa Fe.

Buchanan ran for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

“We really connected and came together tonight,” Buchanan said. “We let our minds go and just came to play. Everything went out way. Santa Fe's a great team.

“It was a great experience for me to play in a game like this.”

Last season, en route to a fourth consecutive 6A title, Union won all four of its playoff games by one point. The Redskins opened the playoffs with a three-point win over Westmoore last week.
