Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has opted to have surgery on his groin in the near future, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

The former OU running back will undergo surgery on Thursday. The typical recovery period is four to six weeks.

The same doctor who performed sports hernia surgery on Peterson in the offseason - Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia - will perform the surgery on Peterson's groin.
