As the Big 12 faces what could be its final hours, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott flew to Oklahoma City on Saturday and spoke with officials from both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, presumably to hand out invitations to join his conference, a source with knowledge of conference realignment negotiations told The Oklahoman.

The meeting included OU president David Boren and athletic director Joe Castiglione as well as OSU president Burns Hargis and Pac-10 deputy commissioner Kevin Weiberg.

OU’s Board of Regents have scheduled a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss conference realignment. There, the regents could authorize OU to relocate to the Pac-10.

OSU’s Board of Regents have not yet announced a special meeting, but have until Monday to give notice, if they also intend to meet Wednesday.

OSU does have a regularly scheduled regents meeting for Friday in Oklahoma City.

Scott next intends to fly to Texas, where he’s expected to hand out invites to Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

The Texas board of regents has called an 11 a.m. meeting Tuesday, for “discussion and appropriate action regarding athletic conference membership.” Regents at Texas Tech will meet later that afternoon. Formal announcements from both schools to join the Pac-10 are expected later that day.

Texas A&M reportedly will put off taking a Pac-10 invite as it explores the possibility of joining the SEC instead., the Rivals site for Texas, reported Saturday that the Texas A&M regents have the votes to join the SEC and could announce that move as early as next week. If Texas A&M does end up in the SEC, the Pac-10’s next choice would be Kansas, an unnamed Big 12 school official told the Austin American-Statesman.

The same Oklahoman source said one last-ditch effort to salvage the Big 12 could take place Monday in a meeting with the athletic directors from the Big 12’s remaining schools.
