Giannini might have to raise $1 million (around $400,000 to buy out Bower's contract, $400,000 to make up the difference for assistants' salaries and an additional $200,000 for the difference between Fedora's and Bower's contracts).
At BCS schools, rounding up $1 million wouldn't be a major issue. At Southern Mississippi, it's a more challenging endeavor.
Fedora, 45, interviewed with Giannini on Dec. 4. He and his wife, Christi, flew to Mississippi on Friday and spent most of the day discussing the vacancy with USM officials.
According to reports, USM would be willing to pay around $700,000 for its new coach. Bower earned $524,983, including incentives.
There have been reports Giannini would like to interview another offensive coordinator from a BCS school. Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix removed their names from consideration last week.
