COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina starting senior outfielder Graham Saiko has left the baseball team.
Coach Chad Holbrook said he and Saiko agreed that it was best for the player to concentrate on getting his degree instead of baseball. Saiko started 56 games last season and hit .263 with 38 runs scored, two homers and 29 RBIs. He also stole 12 bases.
Saiko had previously played at Oklahoma State and Tallahassee Community College in Florida before coming to the Gamecocks.
Saiko figured to have a spot in the outfield this season alongside Tanner English and Connor Bright. Instead, the Gamecocks will need to look for a replacement when fall practice opens Friday.
Reserve outfielder T.J. Costen had transferred from the program earlier this summer.
