MADRID (AP) — Spain has recalled striker Fernando Llorente and picked five players from its Under-21 European Championship-winning squad for next week's friendly match against Ecuador in Quito.
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque had said after Spain lost the Confederations Cup final to Brazil by 3-0 that he would be making several changes to introduce new blood into the squad.
Juventus striker Llorente joins Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas and David Silva from Manchester City as well as Barcelona's Cristian Tello in attack.
Del Bosque has included new faces Inigo Martinez and Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion in addition to Francisco "Isco" Alarcon and new Bayern Munich signing Thiago Alcantara from the U21 team.
Del Bosque said the Aug. 14 game is a key preparation match for World Cup qualification as it would help cement the team. Spain plays Finland in a Group I qualifier on Sept. 6.
"Finland is a very important game, if we win there we would take an important step forward," Del Bosque said. "We are ahead of France, but we can't slacken our efforts as that would be a big mistake," he said.
