Spending wisely is in style

Cheap is the new cool.

With a bumpy economy, investments worth a fraction of what they were two years ago and more layoffs looming, spending smart is the mantra for 2009. When it comes to fashion and beauty, it’s more about low-cost thrills than high-end frills.

Shoes that cost as much as a luxury car payment are going nowhere. Designer gowns beg for attention. Pricey potions get passed over for drugstore brands.

Even people with money to spare feel guilty about splurging. No one wants to sacrifice their style though, so the challenge is doing it on the cheap.

It’s easier than one might think. Most stores are into sales, with many department stores also offering extra discounts. Women who appreciate value flock to T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. Kohl’s continues to score new shoppers with its moderately priced Simply Vera Vera Wang collection. Target lost Isaac Mizrahi to Liz Claiborne, but fashionistas snatch up each trendy Go International and Designer Collaboration limited-edition collection.

Penney’s is still hanging with Bisou Bisou and Nicole by Nicole Miller and recently added Allen B. by Allen B. Schwartz and I "Heart” Ronson by Charlotte Ronson.
