Cowboys' secondary now primary in talent, depth

STILLWATER — The Cowboys return six — count ’em, six — starters in the secondary.

And, no, Oklahoma State hasn’t switched to some 3-2-6 defensive alignment in the giddy aftermath of last December. Yet through returning regulars from the final 2014 depth chart, one player returning from injury and another arriving holding starter credentials elsewhere, OSU carries uncommon experience and depth into this season.

“We have a lot of guys coming back, a lot of experience,” said cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie. “Our numbers are really good. We’re just trying to put these guys into position to play and help us win.

OU football notebook: Josh Heupel's influence grows at Utah St.

Former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Josh Heupel will have plenty of familiar faces around him this season at Utah State.

At least two coaches and a player from Heupel’s time at OU have joined him in Logan, Utah.

Former Sooners players and graduate assistants Joey Halzle and Jon Cooper have taken similar roles on Utah State’s staff.

Heupel, who was fired at OU after last season’s struggles, is the Aggies’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Fullback Joe Palange, a walk-on fullback, announced last week that he would be transferring to Utah State.

District 6A-I-2 preview: Coaches buzzing about Southmoore

Sports | Updated: 6 hr ago | Comment on this article Leave a comment

The results of the District 6A-I-2 coaches’ poll show exactly where Southmoore is predicted to finish in the district, but it doesn’t accurately reflect opposing coaches’ curiosity about the SaberCats.

A team that started multiple freshmen and sophomores last season, Southmoore has generated as much buzz as any team in Class 6A early in the preseason.

Sophomore Casey Thompson returns at quarterback, with another sophomore, Brey Walker, at offensive tackle. Walker, 6-foot-6, 320 pounds, already has scholarship offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Michigan and Arkansas.

“They’re scary right now, and not just because of those young guys,” one opposing coach said of the SaberCats.

For the sixth time in his 17 seasons at Oklahoma, Bob Stoops enters preseason practices without having named a starting quarterback.

But has the outcome been already decided? The Oklahoman's Jason Kersey looks at the reasons why Baker Mayfield looks like the starter.
