‘The Once and Future King,’

T.H. White

Why it matters

“When I was 8 years old I decided I wanted to be a writer when I read ‘The Once and Future King’ by T.H. White. As you know, it is a retelling of the Arthurian legend. It is a novel, but it had such a wonderful history in it. He took me to a new and wonderful place, and I said, ‘I want to do that.’ If I could have just one book to read for the rest of my life, and read it over and over again, it would be ‘The Once and Future King’ by T.H. White.”

What to read next

“The book that made me like nonfiction, I read in high school: ‘Travels with Charley’ by John Steinbeck. He got in his truck with his dog and rode around the country and thought about things.”
