EDMOND — A petting zoo and rock climbing were two of the activities to entertain the children at a picnic in honor of the 125th anniversary of the founding of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the largest Catholic church in the state.
The picnic was one of the anniversary celebrations held throughout the weekend.
The church has 2,180 families, representing more than 10,000 parishioners.
The parish’s first church building, on the southwest corner of First Street and Boulevard, has the distinction of being the first house of worship built in Oklahoma Territory, said Virginia Peters, a longtime parish member and church historian.
The parish bought its current church property at Ninth Street and Boulevard in 1953. A brick church building was constructed on the site in 1955.
