EDMOND — More than 50 students in grades three through seven from St. Mary's Episcopal School will perform “Into the Woods, JR” on Thursday and Friday at First Christian Church in Edmond.
The musical is taken from the book by James Lapine. Music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim and based on classic fairy tales including “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and His Beanstalk” and more. The story ties together the tales with a baker and his wife who want to have a child.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday and 1:30 and 7 p.m. Friday.
Under the direction of music teacher Lisa Day, the students recite their lines, dance and sing their way through the play, after having prepared for nearly five months.
“We only produce a musical every two years,” Day said. “This allows us to create a high quality performance and makes the experience extraordinary for the students, parents and staff.”
The happy-ending musical allows students to focus on teamwork and provide the community with family fun. Day said, “When you set the bar high for the students, they always rise to the challenge.”
