NORMAN — Coach Bob Stoops has said this week the Owen Field crowd hasn’t been a big factor in Oklahoma’s nation-leading 23-game home winning streak.

That hasn’t sat well with many Sooner fans.

"It’s really hard to understand. Deeply disappointing,” said OU alum and Norman resident Mark Fried. "He’s saying the fans haven’t played a role during his time here, that he has this home record in spite of the fact the fans are non-participants.

"It’s a little bit deflating.”

Second-ranked Texas Tech comes to Norman this weekend for the biggest OU home game since the Sooners defeated No. 1 Nebraska in 2000.

OU is 59-2 under Stoops at home, the only losses coming in 2001 against Oklahoma State and 2005 against TCU.

Stoops, however, refused this week to credit the crowd as a significant reason for OU’s dominance at home.

"I think maybe just our overall focus and play are the biggest reasons,” Stoops said. "I don’t think we’ve ever been known to have an overly ruckus crowd.

More fan reaction about Bob Stoops’ comments that fans haven’t been a big factor during Stoops’ 59-2 home record at Oklahoma:

→I just hope we come out loud for this game. There hasn’t been a game this big since 2000. I expect the place to be rocking.

— Scott, Weatherford

→I think as a general rule that I would agree with coach Stoops, except for big games. The Missouri game last year was a perfect example — it was deafening. The game Saturday night will be just as loud.

— David, Oklahoma City

→Bob is getting a bit of a big head. We have been embarrassed on the national stage many times in the last few years and he has the nerve to talk about crowd noise? I have witnessed several teams have to take timeouts on the North end because they couldn’t hear.

— Russ, Edmond

→Sooner fans show up for big games but it’s a little foolish to scream your head off when the home team is up by 50 against a mid major. Missouri last year was as loud as I’ve ever heard a stadium and I’ve been to OSU, LSU, Texas A&M and many others.

— Kent, Edmond

→I don’t really feel like he is coming down on fans. I think he is just trying to call us out to be rowdier than usual. No problem Bob.

— Matt, Moore

→I have attended several games at OU and there are many times where the crowds have been very quiet, as if attending a symphony. At times, however, the crowds have been very loud.

— Odell, Oklahoma City

→There’s not been a competitive game. I love coach Stoops, but I ain’t gonna yell and go crazy over Chattanooga.

— Lynn, Oklahoma City

→If it doesn’t matter, then why are we getting kicked in the bowl games? After every big game, he has said the "crowd was great tonight.” He should have just asked the fans to be loud this week.

— Michael, Edmond
