STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — The defensive coordinator position at Stanford has been endowed in the name of coach David Shaw's father.
The university announced Friday that a "generous gift" from a donor who chose to remain anonymous renamed the position the Willie Shaw Director of Defense. Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Derek Mason is the first to hold the title.
David Shaw says it's "another sign of how unique Stanford University is."
Willie Shaw had two separate coaching stints of three years on The Farm, arriving in 1974 as the outside linebackers and special teams coach before taking over the secondary from 1975-76. He returned to Stanford in 1989 as secondary coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1990.
Willie Shaw often is still at practices and in the football offices to offer advice to his son and the staff.
