Star Spencer junior Jerome Smith returns after gaining valuable experience as a sophomore running back.

Having graduated a power runner in Kenneth Davis, Star Spencer will turn to quickness in the backfield this season.

Speedy junior Jerome Smith leads the way behind a big but young offensive line that will be the key to Star Spencer’s rushing success as the Bobcats try to make a return to the playoffs.

Another junior, Milon Smith, and senior quarterback Marshawn Reid II, contribute in the run game as well.

Though the Bobcats have very few seniors on the roster, coach James Harding has been pleased with his team’s maturity through the preseason.

“We’ve still got some guys who are a little untested,” said Harding, entering his third year at Star. “But you can tell we’re a little more of a veteran football team by our execution. It’s probably been its best since I’ve been here.

“These guys have been in the weight room during the summer. We went to a couple of camps, so even though we’re young, we’re expecting a lot out of those guys.”

Star Spencer opens the season hosting rival Millwood at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
