‘Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Best of Both Worlds' (Blu-ray)
“Star Trek: The Next Generation” created a memorable cliffhanger at the end of season three, as the Enterprise faces off against the Borg.
Since it's on the cover to the package, it's probably not too extreme of a spoiler, nearly 23 years later, to note that the cliffhanger features Capt. Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), abducted and seemingly assimilated by the techno-organic species of the Borg.
The two-parter has been edited into a feature presentation and restored in 1080p. In “Best of Both Worlds,” a Federation colony is destroyed and signs point to the Borg. Lt. Cmdr. Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) comes on board the Enterprise to lend her expertise to facing down the Borg threat. Soon, it's clear she's angling for first officer Will Riker's job as well. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) has been offered his own command, but isn't sure about leaving the Enterprise, Starfleet's flagship vessel.
Once Picard is captured, Riker finds himself in command and forced to make key decisions for the future of the Enterprise, and possibly the human race. He's also forced to work with Shelby, acting as first officer in this crisis circumstance.
These episodes look and sound outstanding. Fans that are planning on buying the individual seasons on Blu-ray might not see the need for this episode separately. But as considered as a stand-alone or a sampler for those new to Trek, “Best of Both Worlds” succeeds on every level.
The high-stakes action of this two-parter makes for a thrilling experience that's on par, or better, with the theatrical films. Extras on this disc include audio commentary and a featurette, “Regeneration: Engaging the Borg.”
