Simply having an attitude of gratitude can powerfully influence a person’s life, Debbie Moore, a licensed professional counselor in Edmond, said.
Moore recently counseled a couple who were stressing over money to buy Christmas gifts and pay medical bills incurred with the birth of one child and surgeries for two. “As I told them: If your problem can be fixed with money – even if you don’t have money – it’s not a big problem. Even Donald Trump couldn’t buy cancer away,” she said. “You don‘t have to look very far to find someone who’s in a whole lot worse position than you.
“Thankfulness opens the door to happiness,” Moore said. “If you’re grateful for what you have, happiness comes in small things, like a smile or a hug.”
Diana Cox Crawford, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, agrees. “Being thankful opens us up to community and helps us remember we’re not there by ourselves. When we’re not thankful, it stifles us and cuts us off from community. Then, it becomes all about us.”
Crawford had a former parishioner in her 80s who kept a thankfulness journal. “Every day, she wrote down something she was thankful for, and she never wrote the same thing twice,” Crawford said.
Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Jari Askins
I continue to be very thankful for my family, who are very supportive. I'm especially grateful to come from a supportive community, Duncan, and for my church family at First Christian Church. I'm able to go home almost every Sunday. And it's a place I can go and be me, Jeri, not lieutenant governor. I stay grounded, and it helps me remember why I ran for public office.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett
“Personally, I remind myself daily how lucky I am to have a family and for the health of my family – including my 87-year-old mom, who is doing well and still lives in the same home in Putnam City where I grew up; my wife, my three sons; and my 1 ½-year-old granddaughter, Lily. Professionally, I think our city is extraordinarily well-positioned to achieve a lot of our goals, including the relocation of Interstate 40, the creation of a public transportation system we can be proud of and continued focus on the inner city. We’ve put ourselves in an envious position with a lot of higher-paying jobs and more people with health care. Unemployment is still going down, and real estate prices are still going up. I think we’re the only city in the country that can say that.
