KAKE, Alaska (AP) — State officials now say 5,500 gallons of gasoline spilled into a harbor in southeast Alaska this weekend.

The initial report was 7,000 gallons spilled in Kake on Saturday, but was downgraded after further investigation.

Response efforts included the removal of all vessels from the harbor and the use of vapor mist to aid in clean up and to push away fumes. A 100-yard sheen near the fuel dock had dissipated by Sunday.

Officials said the spill occurred when a tank pipeline in the harbor ruptured, apparently severed by a floating pier during tidal changes.

The area is used to harvest shellfish. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is recommending people not harvest shellfish from beaches close to the fuel facility.
