PROPOSED HEALTH CARE MEASURES

There are two proposed constitutional amendments that would allow Oklahoma to opt out of a national health care plan.

House Joint

Resolution 1054

The measure by Rep. Mike Ritze, R-Broken Arrow, and Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, passed the House 77-10 earlier this month. The measure has been assigned to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.

Senate Joint

Resolution 5

The measure by Sen. Dan Newberry, R-Tulsa, and Rep. Mike Thompson, R-Oklahoma City, passed the Senate last month in a vote of 30-15. It’s expected to be heard on the House floor this week.

Nearly 40 Republicans from the state Senate and House gathered Monday afternoon to show their displeasure with a health care reform bill passed Sunday by the Democratic majority in Congress.

Lawmakers also called on Attorney General Drew Edmondson to file a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of the reform bill that is backed by President Barack Obama.

"This health care bill is a disaster for all the states, not just Oklahoma,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn Coffee, R-Oklahoma City.

"In truth, it’s the Democrat jobs elimination bill of 2010.”

Coffee said measures under the proposed health care reform bill would cost Oklahoma $1 billion over the next 10 years in new spending.

"If the measure becomes law, it will wreck Oklahoma’s already fragile state budget and place undue economic hardships on the people,” he said.

House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa, said the health care reform bill is the federal government overstepping its bounds.
