State Schools Superintendent Sandy Garrett said today that social struggles such as poverty and budget crunches due to rising costs should not keep schools from setting and reaching higher goals.

She focused on three initiatives in her annual Oklahoma State of Education address at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

They are:

  • Reducing classroom interruptions to make sure children have every opportunity to learn.
  • Hiring graduation coaches and test coordinators so counselors have time to help students in need.
  • Integrating technology so students are as connected in the classroom as they are out of the classroom.

Give her some credit Carl. Okie ranked 46th before she took over in quality of education, and you rank 47th now. The education system sucked before she took over, thanks to previous inept leaders, and it still does. Somebody made mention that some 440,000 Okies can't read, thats nearly 15% of Okies population. Do you really believe the legislature wants an educated voter in this state? Better try again....

Get this woman, if you can call her that, out of office. Oklahoma and the kids will be much better off if we do.

Must be an election year--two articles on Garrett in two days?

Sandy Garrett doesn't have a clue about what is wrong with education in this state. She is out of touch with reality or just simply doesn't care. We MUST wake up and demand change or we are going to be worse off than we are already. Oklahoma has great potential. Let's live up to it.

Over 444,000 Oklahoman's cannot read or write and 85% of juveniles who are involved with the justice system cannot read. Schools and the State Department of Ed turn a deaf ear to Dyslexia. It is very real. It is a national crisis. We must wake up and tell Sandy to move on out!

I would like to know where some of these people who post get their info. Everything I could find has Oklahoma ranked in the mid-30s. I don't think the schools in Oklahoma are perfect, but I don't believe we are turning out students who can't succeed either. Education has a lot to do with parenting, if your kid struggles look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are helping to further your student's success on a daily basis.

This office needs to be eliminated. do not need over 350 state education department employees watching the hundreds of school districts in oklahoma throw away money. If not eliminated, please term limit the state superintendent.

Sandy is pathetic...she has been in office for nearly 20 years and oklahoma's ranking in education has actually dropped one point from 46th to 47th. All she ever wants to do is throw more money at a broken system. Consolidation, administration, lack of teacher accountability, lack of student outreach are the issues with oklahoma public schools. I find it ironic that we spend more money per student for public education than all but 15 states, but we are ranked 47th in results. Pathetic...

Dusty...actually the lottery takes money away from the state...when you factor in all the social ills the lottery and casino gambling bring the state the net dollar amount into state coffers is negligible....study after study has shown this to be true in every state.
Jonathon, Oklahoma City - Jul 8, 2008 at 8:51 pm
I would like to begin by saying that Sandy is not living in the real world. This is for you Lou, why the sarcastic comments about the horse tracks, lottery and liquor? They may not be "good" moral things but I'm pretty sure you are not forced to partake in them. I realize that the lottery is not making as much money as it was said it would but it is giving money to the schools and that is better that $0. Let people live their own lives and do what they want, I'm sure that is what you do.
Dusty, oklahoma city - Jul 8, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Maybe Sandy ought to go and buy a whole bunch of lottery tickets, don't forget, it's for the kids, same as the horse tracks, liquor by the drink. Who actually benefits from these things? I know, maybe the money goes to pay off or buy out inadequate superintendents the board continues to hire.

Cheer up and lighten up. Oklahomas education quality ranks 46th or 47th in the country, you've still not hit rock bottom...

How about eliminating the wasteful payroll and administrative overhead by consolidating school districts, then using that money to better the system rather than meat a bloated payroll?
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Jul 8, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Oklahoma public schools continue to deteriorate under the dept of educations inefficient and bloated system. How much more money do we throw at this failure???? Biggest example of waste in any state or federal department in the country.
