Shepherd Mall, Oklahoma City's oldest enclosed shopping center, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week citing debts of between $10 million and $50 million and assets between $50 million and $100 million. Neither attorneys or the property manager for the mall's owner, VTA Oklahoma City LLC., returned calls to The Oklahoman.

But the filing caps a decade in which the mall has seen its success as an adapted office park rise and fall with the fortunes of its tenants.

I wanted to see some old picures, property layout, stories, something / anything. I remember seeing the square chunk of land that contained the house and yard (at the TG&Y Family Center end) as a kid. I used to marvel at how a house could sit 10 - 15 feet above the parking lot level all by itself. It looked very strange, but I guess that was part of the deal. How weird to live in the middle of a parking lot / shopping center. As I recall, it lasted for several years before they all died, I guess. I'm guessing because SOMEONE FORGOT TO FINISH THE DANG ARTICLE!

Perhaps the owners of Crossroads Mall should take note. The downturn for Shepherd Mall began with women being kidnapped from their parking lot, usually around Christmas, and then the owners developed the tendency to pander to the gangster types with a high percentage of stores selling gaudy 'bling,' cell phones and pagers(remember those?) and sports-related clothing.

Why doesn't Farmers buy the mall? Their insurance and profits are so high they should be able to afford it.

Eating at the El Chico's was fun. It was the most exciting part of the trip there after being drug around by my mom at what I think was Dillards. I also remember seeing "Mary Poppins" at the theater there and eating at an ice cream parlor afterwards somewhere in the Mall.

It was my favorite mall in town...remember the 2 story Sears that shared the parking lot???? The Orange Julius cafe??? Once they enclosed and enlarged Penn Square, it was curtains for them...If they charged for Mall Walking, they would be way wealthy....NOT SUGGESTING THAT...just a bad attempt at humor....

I really enjoyed Shepherd Mall as a kid. I was sad to see it become an office park because now I have to drive to Penn Square.
