Oklahoma football: Sterling Shepard appears ready to go

While Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel was coy when asked about the return of wide receiver Sterling Shepard, Jalen Saunders seemed a bit more confident that Shepard would be back Saturday against Kansas State after leaving the Baylor game early with a concussion and then missing the win over Iowa State.

“We just feel like our offense is back now to our normal position,” Saunders said. “It kind of threw us out of place, but not too much out of place last week of course. Sterling has a tremendous drive and plays a big role in our offense.”

Heupel said Shepard's return would help “if that happens.”

“Unfortunately we saw some of missing him in the Baylor game, what we had to do, shuffling receivers around, guys not playing in their primary positions,” Heupel said. “We didn't execute as well as we needed to. Having him back, he plays extremely physical and competitive. He's reliable. Quarterbacks have a trust factor with him.”

A day after Sooners coach Bob Stoops said it wouldn't be beneficial to name his starting quarterback before Saturday, Heupel wasn't going to give anything up.

“Yeah, right,” Heupel said when asked who would start Saturday. “I defer to him.”
