STILLWATER — A Stillwater musician has found himself at the top of a Texas music report.
The Texas Regional Radio Report lists artist Bo Phillips at No. 1 for his single, “Red Dirt Girl.”
“This is my first anything out of the top 30 pretty much,” Phillips said.
He described “Red Dirt Girl” as a song that reaches other performers in the industry as well as the listeners. As a result of his No. 1 accolade, Phillips said his name will be found in Billboard Magazine this week.
“The fans kept listening and kept requesting it and radio tied on to it. It's such a huge, huge blessing,” Phillips said.
Friends and family have congratulated him on the achievement that finds him at the top of a list graced by other well-known acts such as Kevin Fowler, Randy Rogers Band, Reckless Kelly and Phillips' brother, Stoney LaRue.
“Everybody says it's not a competition and the fact of the matter is you're not out here to beat anybody,” Phillips said. “You just want to be at the top. The fact that everyone respects the music and myself alongside these other artists, I'm extremely grateful and flattered.”
Phillip's original expectations were exceeded.
“I was going to be happy with a top 10 (spot) on this since every one of our singles has increased in rankings slightly,” Phillips said.
“Red Dirt Girl” is also found at the No. 3 spot on the Texas Music Chart.
Phillips, a former high schoolteacher, bartender and bouncer and father of three, said he's played professionally for slightly less than 10 years. He has released three albums in his career.
Phillips said he is proud of the success the single has achieved.
“The thing I'm most proud of is that we didn't hire this big promotional company to do it,” Phillips said.
He said it was the result of phone calls, radio visits and performances. And Phillips said he continues to love what he does.
“The fact that I can go and make a living from it and get some recognition for it, is beyond my dreams,” Phillips said.
