Stillwater Regional baseball notebook: Triple play helps Cowboys escape jam

Oklahoma State starter Jon Perrin was in trouble in the third after an error and a hit-by-pitch put the first two Cal State Fullerton runners on base with the Titans’ No. 2 hitter coming to the plate.

But with the runners moving, Keegan Dale lined right back to Perrin and Timmy Richards and Clay Williamson were easy targets.

With Richards standing on third and Williamson on second, Perrin spun around and threw it to Donnie Walton for the second out and Walton had an easy throw to Tanner Kreitemeier at first for the triple play.

It was the Cowboys’ first triple play since March 10, 2012, against Alabama A&M.

MCCONAUGHY COMES UP BIG AGAIN

For the second consecutive night, Cowboys third baseman Craig McConaughy made a highlight-reel worthy play with the bases loaded and two outs to save at least one run.

Saturday, it came on Williamson’s bloop over McConaughy’s head. But McConaughy ran under it and extended to haul in the popup and keep the Cowboys ahead 9-3.

Against Binghamton in the opener, McConaughy grabbed a bouncer barehanded and barely got the out at first. He nearly duplicated the feat in the fourth inning against Fullerton when Tanner Pinkston hit a similar ball but just beat it out to drive in the Titans’ first run.
