NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops declined to say Wednesday if Blake Bell will enter next season as starting quarterback.
“There’s no way to answer that question now,” Stoops said. “That doesn’t make any sense for me to answer that with three games and a bowl game left.”
Bell lost the preseason quarterback battle to redshirt freshman Trevor Knight, but took over as starter in the third game of the season. The junior has had a couple really good games, but has also struggled with consistency.
In Oklahoma’s 35-21 win at Notre Dame in late September, Bell completed 22 of 30 pass attempts for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
But last Thursday against Baylor, Bell was 15 of 35 for 150 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Bell, Knight, sophomore Kendal Thompson and redshirting freshman Cody Thomas all return next season, and the Sooners will add Edmond Santa Fe standout Justice Hansen in their 2014 recruiting class.
“I think it’s fair to say you can’t discard — or however you say it — what he has done that’s been really positive, right?” Stoops said of Bell. “In the end, you have to take that into consideration as well. And we do, even if other people don’t.”
