'STOOPS@10' places fourth in APSE contest

Oklahoman Published: April 10, 2009
The STOOPS@10 about Bob Stoops' 10th season as the University of Oklahoma 's football coach has won fourth in the "Projects" category of the annual Associated Press Sports' Editors contest.

Jake Trotter in "Breaking News" and Jenni Carlson in "Columns" also won honorable mentions, or top 10 honors, in the national contest. Results were announced this week.

STOOPS@10 was a series published in August of last year. Although many staff members in Sports and other departments were involved in the project, the lead writers were Berry Tramel , Jake and John Helsley.

Sports Editor Mike Sherman said the eight-part multimedia series was conceived in March 2008 after every Sports staff member was asked to submit 50 ideas for future stories or projects. The Sports editors then met and created a "planafesto," he said.

"It's a plan that keeps on giving, even now," said Mike, who gave credit to the entire Sports staff members for their ideas and work on the series. "It was not just one person ... it was the whole department."

The Louisville Courier Journal won the category with the Birmingham News finishing second and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette third.

The "Projects" award was one of six that The Oklahoman won this year for work published in 2008. Besides Jake and Jenni, the Sunday Sports section and Special Sections (the annual football preview) placed in the top 10 and the Daily Sports section placed in the top 20. It also was the second time that Jenni has placed in APSE; she was fifth in features in 2002.
