Assistant Sports Editor Hayley Riggs in making the announcement in an e-mail wrote: "Great job, everyone!"

When the initial announcement was made in Las Vegas , Assistant Sports Editor Ryan Sharp wrote in an e-mail: "I've been here five years and this is by far the best we've done since I've been here. Just outstanding work by lots of folks."

Jake placing in an individual and team category also puts him in exclusive company: It is the second-straight year that an Oklahoman sportswriter has been named as placing in two separate categories. Last year, Berry placed second in columns and fourth in features for work in 2007. Staff writers from The Oklahoman have now placed nine times in the writing competitions since 2002.

Last year, Sports earned "top 10" honors in Special Sections and "top 20" honors in Sunday Sections for 2007.

Here is the list of our past individual winners:
-- 2007: Berry Tramel , second in columns and fourth in features.
-- 2006: Mike Baldwin, fourth in features.
-- 2005: Berry , honorable mention in columns.
-- 2004: George Schroeder, second in features.
-- 2003: George Schroeder, honorable mention in features.
