PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Nearly all schools in Rhode Island have been closed and more than three dozen flights have been cancelled as a winter storm hits the region.

The National Weather Service expects Wednesday's storm to dump around 3 to 6 inches of snow on the state. It says travel will be difficult and dangerous through 11 a.m.

State Police say they responded to 16 accidents before 8:45 a.m., although they say the roads seem to be improving midmorning, after snow turned to sleet and rain in some areas. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority warns of delays.

Parking bans are in effect in several communities.

State offices are mostly open. Courthouses are open, although proceedings are suspended.

More than 40 flights are canceled or delayed at T.F. Green airport.
