Storms unleash strong winds, rain on Oklahoma

Severe weather brought strong winds, isolated heavy rain and much cooler temperatures Thursday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries with storms that developed along an advancing cold front.

The National Weather Service said Thursday's strongest winds occurred in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. A gust of 75 mph tore off roof shingles on some homes about six miles west of Edmond. A wind gust of 58 mph also was reported near Bethany.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric spokesman Brian Alford said about 16,500 customers were without power at 8 p.m. Thursday. He said most of that total came from north and west Oklahoma City. Alford said service crews would be working through the night to restore power.

Dennis Elementary School, 11800 James L. Dennis Drive, was damaged significantly during the storm.
