Stranded Man Used Snowboard for Shelter Published: April 3, 2014

The San Francisco snowboarder who disappeared Monday during a storm near Boreal ski resort in the Sierra Nevada weathered a cold night in a shelter he crafted from tree branches before slogging his way through waist-deep snow and mountainous terrain to safety Tuesday evening, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

Abe Finkelstein, a 25-year-old engineer and avid outdoorsman, was suffering minor frostbite but was generally OK after trekking out of wilderness north of Lake Tahoe, according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office.

Search crews met Finkelstein shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Soda Springs, along Interstate 80, where he knocked on a door to ask to use a phone, said Capt. Jeff Pettitt. He was taken to a hospital, released after a brief checkup and reunited with his father.
